Kawasaki, Japan Mirrors in Our Night—A Solo Exhibition of Contemporary Daguerreotypes by Takashi Arai.I will exhibit 3 sets of brand-new works for this show: The first series is “Mirrors in Our Nights,” twelve 8×10″ daguerreotypes newly taken after the unforgettable day of March 11th. For many years Touhoku has been my mental mainstay, I tried to make each daguerreotype as an unique monument for my friends displaced by the earthquake and tsunami, and nuclear disaster in Fukushima. The second set “Portraits of Us” includes 6 portraits of my family and one image from my grandfather’s funeral in the end of this March. The third sequences are over 120 plates from “Daily D-type projects.” Since January 1st I’ve been taking one daguerreotype a day, and I will continuously add new plates to this show until October 10th.

Santa Fe, NM, USA Santa Fe Photographic Workshops—The Daguerreotype: A Contemporary Approach with Jerry Spagnoli. We cover two methods of exposing the plate. First, we try the traditional method, using the plate in-camera to produce a direct positive. Then we learn about the alternative to “live” exposures: contact printing from a positive transparency. This method can produce an image indistinguishable from an in-camera plate—but with greater control over the film positive, can provide superior results. Along with these methodologies, we learn about the historical context of the daguerreotype, as Jerry presents representative images and relevant information from the 1840s and 1850s.

Swan Valley, MT, USA Photographers’ Formulary Workshop—Daguerreotype: A Contemporary Approach. A daguerreotype workshop with Jerry Spagnoli. The daguerreotype is as much an object to hold in your hand as an image to look into. This class presents a method for producing high quality daguerreotypes without the use of the dangerous chemicals usually associated with the process. This method was discovered by Edward Bequerrel in the 1840′s and has existed as a scientific curiosity until now. It is a process, simple in its parts but full of subtle techniques.
